Distinguished and Famous people from Boulia
Boulia's fossil collections owe much to people who learned by searching, preparing specimens and working with museums. Their discoveries reveal an ancient marine world beneath a landscape now associated with inland Queensland.
🦴 Dick and John Suter
Richard “Dick” Suter first arrived in Boulia in 1953 and maintained a lifelong connection with the district through station work, fencing, farming and fossil collecting. His brother John helped spark his interest in fossils, and the two assembled important collections. One went to the South Australian Museum; a later collection became part of Boulia's marine reptile display. Their names are preserved in Bouliachelys suteri, a fossil sea turtle found by the brothers. Dick also served as a museum curator. His nickname, “Dinosaur Dick”, was memorable, although the marine reptiles that made his collection famous were a different branch of prehistoric life.
